Committees

There are three types of committees at the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA).

Governance committees assist in fulfilling the oversight duties delegated by Council. Even though they action the items, Council is still accountable for the duties. Six representatives from Council sit on each governance committee: Finance and audit, leadership review and governance, and nominating.

Regulatory committees support strong decision-making in the public interest. Some regulatory committees are established under the Health Professions Act, and others provide additional support.

There is one standing committee at the CRNA, the Pension Compliance Committee.

The representatives vary on each committee.

Registration

Appointments:

Registrant and public seats are chosen by the College.

Governance Policy:

GP11

Responsibilities:

Reviews complex applications to the register.

Summary:

To support public safety, the committee with determine the risk on new or existing applications by approving, deferring or refusing eligibility. They may choose to impose restrictions or conditions on the permit as well.

Registration Review

Appointments:

Registrant and public seats are chosen by the College.

Governance Policy:

GP12

Responsibilities:

Hearing appears of registration decisions.

Summary:

Reviews are brought to this committee by applications that appeal the decisions made by the registrar, registration or competence committees. The decision may be upheld or overturned.

Complaint Review

Appointments:

Public seats chosen by the Government of Alberta. Registrant seats chosen by the College.

Governance Policy:

GP12

Responsibilities:

Reviews select complaint dismissals and proposed settlement agreements.

Summary:

Complainants may request this committee to review a complaint dismissal decision. This committee will also ratify, refuse to ratify, or suggest changes to proposed settlement agreements from alternative complaint resolutions.

Hearing Tribunal

Appointments:

Public seats chosen by the Government of Alberta. Registrant seats chosen by the College.

Governance Policy:

GP14

Responsibilities:

Holds hears to decide on the unprofessional conduct of an investigated registrant.

Summary:

Complaints and compliance referrals to the tribunal receive reviews of the evidence against the nursing standards. Decisions can result in measures for registrant rehabilitation and recommend their permit to have conditions, suspension or cancellation.

Appeals

Appointments:

Registrant and public seats are chosen from current Council representatives.

Governance Policy:

GP15

Responsibilities:

Hears appeals of hearing tribunal decisions.

Summary:

Appeals may be brought to this committee by the investigated person, or the complaints director, within 30 days of a decision. The committee may uphold, overturn, vary the original decision or refer the matter to the hearings director to be heard again before a different hearing tribunal.

Competence

Appointments:

Registrant and public seats are chosen by the College.

Governance Policy:

GP10

Responsibilities:

Continued development, operation and evaluation of the continuing competence program.

Summary:

To support the program, the committee determines whether a registrant has met the continuing competence requirements for a permit or complied with conditions.

Finance and Audit

Appointments:

Representatives from Council, three public representatives and three registrant representatives.

Governance Policy:

Responsibilities:

Financial oversight of the CRNA.

Leadership Review and Governance

Appointments:

Representatives from Council, three public representatives and three registrant representatives.

Governance Policy:

GP18

Responsibilities:

This committee review performance of the CEO and Registrar, Council and Chair.

Nominating

Appointments:

Representatives from Council, three public representatives and three registrant representatives.

Governance Policy:

GP17

Responsibilities:

Independently recruits, vets and recommends nominees to committees.
