Revised Standard of Practice and New Practice Advice Documents Now Available

The CRNA has published three new documents for registrants:

Prescribing: Standards for Nurse Practitioners

This standard applies to nurse practitioners (NP), graduate nurse practitioners (GNP), neonatal nurse practitioners (NNPs) and graduate neonatal nurse practitioners (GNNPs), and establishes the expectations for registrants in all practice settings for safe, appropriate prescribing of drugs and non-pharmacological therapies to assist in the reduction of patient harm and negative effects.

This document was reviewed and updated to:

  • remove the barrier to NPs prescribing anabolic steroids,
  • clarify expectations on prescribing full agonist opioid drugs,
  • strengthen patient safety and quality of care related to documentation, communication and prescribing practices, and
  • editorial changes to improve clarity and alignment with existing standards.

Coordination of Care: Practice Advice for RNs and NPs and Collaborative Care: Practice Advice for RNs and NPs

Both of these practice advice documents are part of the CRNA's ongoing standards modernization initiative – to provide clear, concise and relevant direction to the profession, that is responsive to the health system needs and which serve the public interest.

These documents incorporate current evidence related to person-centred care approaches and evolving practices related to connected and integrated care delivered across diverse providers and teams, organizations and sectors. They provide practical tools and resources to support registrants in applying existing standards to increasingly complex and interconnected health-care systems.
