Registered Nurse Consultant

Role Overview

At the CRNA, we are committed to regulatory excellence and safeguarding the public interest. As part of this commitment, we are seeking a Registered Nurse (RN) Consultant to support regulatory decision making and provide subject matter expertise across our Regulatory Service Delivery (RSD) Model.

This role plays a critical part in embedding legislation, regulations, policy and emerging trends into the CRNA’s registration and regulatory processes.

Positioned at the intersection of policy, practice and decision making, the RN Consultant offers a systems-level view of regulatory services by supporting internal teams, guiding external partners and referring matters to regulatory committees where appropriate.

Assess Applications (Registration Case Management)

Review, analyze and make case-by-case decisions for applicants who do not meet one or more registration requirement(s).
Assess and process reinstatement applications.
Communicate registration decisions in accordance with legislated notification requirements.

Provide Consultations

Offer expert guidance to applicants, registrants, employers and partners on legislation, standards and regulatory expectations.
Conduct consultations with employers, disability specialists, insurers, union representatives and others regarding limits or conditions imposed on a registrant’s practice.
Consult with applicants/registrants on unregistered practice, registration processes and expectations throughout the application lifecycle.

Manage Conditions and Authorizations

Apply, monitor and remove practice conditions and restrictions on registrants’ permits.
Review and assess fitness to practise concerns; escalate to Professional Conduct as needed.
Develop and monitor Consensual Resolution Agreements for non-incapacity related eligibility concerns.
Analyze and assess the risks associated with limits on practice and provide recommendations.

Review and Implement Regulatory Policy

Maintain and update the CRNA’s Regulatory Policy Manual in collaboration with internal partners.
Ensure registration policies are evidence-informed and aligned with Right-touch relational regulatory principles and administrative law.
Evaluate policy effectiveness and identify opportunities for improvement.
Participate in internal audits aligned with approved regulatory policies and standards.

Support Regulatory Committees

Identify, prepare and present cases requiring committee review through the CRNA’s Governance team.
Manage compliance processes for post-secondary nursing education programs.
Collaborate with governance and regulatory teams to support sound committee operations.

Education

Bachelor's degree in nursing.
Active nursing permit and in good standing.

Experience

Seven to nine (7-9) years of progressive experience, which may include clinical practice, administration, education, research, policy or regulatory roles.
Applied knowledge of Alberta’s health system, nursing legislation and the regulatory environment.
Experience with administrative law, investigations or regulatory case management is an asset.

Regulatory Knowledge and Judgment: Deep understanding of nursing practice, professional standards and regulatory principles.
Customer Focus and Professionalism: Relational, service-oriented approach with exceptional professionalism and discretion.
Technological Proficiency: Proficiency in MS365 applications (Outlook, SharePoint, Teams, etc.).
Project Leadership: Ability to inspire collaboration and lead initiatives to successful outcomes.
