As Councillor Justin Burkett’s term as Council Chair comes to an end on Sept. 30, 2026, we want to recognize and thank him for four years of thoughtful, principled and steady leadership.
Councillor Burkett has brought to the role a rare combination of regulatory insight, academic curiosity, governance experience and a deep commitment to nursing. His background in emergency nursing, humanitarian aid, international education, simulation, leadership and emerging technologies has helped shape the way he approaches Council’s work: with clarity, compassion, discipline and a strong focus on the public interest.
Under Councillor Burkett’s leadership as Chair, Council has guided the CRNA through a significant period of change and achievement. This has included advancing a Right-touch relational approach to regulation, strengthening governance and performance measurement, supporting important registration innovations for internationally educated nurses, overseeing the continued evolution of standards and regulatory programs, supporting nurse practitioner regulatory modernization, and maintaining a clear focus on safe, competent and ethical nursing care for Albertans.
During Councillor Burkett’s time as Chair, the CRNA also reached record levels of registrants, strengthened its quality assurance and risk oversight work, continued its commitment to Indigenous health and culturally safe care, and earned external recognition for regulatory innovation and excellence. These accomplishments reflect not only the work of the organization, but also the steady governance leadership that helped make them possible.
