Strong Permit Renewal Numbers Reflect Continued Commitment to Nursing Excellence in Alberta

The College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) is pleased to share the results of the 2025–2026 permit renewal period, highlighting the dedication of Alberta’s nursing professionals. For the third year in a row, a record number of individuals renewed their practice permits with the CRNA.

Permit Renewal Highlights

• 46,225 registrants renewed their permits for the 2025-2026 practice year. This includes:
  
  • 45,171 registered nurses (RN)*
  • 1,054 nurse practitioners (NP)
• 4,719 individuals registered as non-practising. These individuals can apply to return to practice at any time throughout the year.

The number of nurse practitioners has seen the most growth, increasing by 13 per cent from the 2024-2025 practice year.

2025-2026 Renewal Numbers 

Outside of renewal, nurses continue to join the CRNA's register for various reasons throughout the year, this includes: recent graduates, transfers from other Canadian and international jurisdictions, and those who choose to return to practice after taking a leave.

Registration Data Explained 

The CRNA's practice year runs from Oct. 1 to Sept. 30. Registrants are required to renew their permits on an annual basis. Renewal is one of the ways the CRNA protects the public, ensuring registrants continue to provide safe, competent and ethical care in Alberta.

*This number includes certified graduate nurses, a legacy category that no new individuals can be registered in.
