Renewal Readiness: The CRNA's Practice Year and Renewal

April 24, 2026

In its role to protect the public, the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) issues practice permits to applicants who have met the registration requirements. Successful applicants who have been issued a permit are called registrants.

While a CRNA registrant may receive their initial permit at any point during the year, that permit will expire at the end of the CRNA's practice year (which runs annually from Oct. 1 - Sept. 30) and the registrant must renew their permit during the designated annual renewal period (Aug. 1 - Sept. 30) to continue practising in Alberta.*

If an individual does not renew their permit with the CRNA, they can no longer work as a registered nurse (RN) or nurse practitioner (NP) in Alberta. The CRNA will inform employers of expired permits to ensure their employees are not practising without a permit.

For more information, visit the CRNA's Practice Years page.

*There are some exceptions for courtesy and provisional permits.
