Practice Permits Expire in One Week

Registrants of the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) must renew their permits on an annual basis, between Aug. 1 and Sept. 30, to continue practising in Alberta.

Registrants must meet several requirements to maintain their permits with the CRNA.

Once a registrant’s completed renewal application is reviewed and approved by the CRNA, they can continue practising in the 2026-2027 practice year which runs from Oct. 1, 2026 to Sept. 30, 2027.

If a registrant does not submit their completed renewal application by Sept. 30, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. MT: 

• They will be unable to practise in Alberta beginning on Oct. 1, 2026
• Their permit status will change to expired (cancelled for non-renewal)
• Their employer will be notified of their expired permit status
• They will lose any application progress — and must begin a return to practice application if they would like to re-apply to practise in Alberta 

Some registrants may choose to move to the non-practising register rather than renewing their permits. Former registrants and individuals on the non-practising register cannot:

• Practice under or use any of the following protected titles in Alberta:
  • Registered nurse (RN)
  • Certified graduate nurse (CGN)
  • Nurse practitioner (NP)
  • Graduate nurse (GN)
  • Graduate nurse practitioner (GNP)
• Accrue practice hours and education hours
