Our Mandate

Learn about our mandate, standards, licensing and commitment to Indigenous health.

The College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) is the regulatory body for registered nurses, nurse practitioners and graduate nurses in Alberta. Our authority is established under the Health Professions Act (HPA), which grants the CRNA the legal mandate to regulate the nursing profession. Everything we do is rooted in our responsibility to protect the health and safety of Albertans by promoting safe, competent and ethical nursing practice.

Our mandate includes:

  • Setting and enforcing standards of practice and ethical conduct for registrants
  • Administering the Continuing Competence Program to ensure ongoing professional development
  • Managing registration and licensing for qualified nursing professionals in Alberta
  • Investigating and addressing complaints, conduct and fitness to practice concerns
  • Supporting transparency, accountability and public trust in the nursing profession
Our Regulatory Philosophy

The Regulatory Spectrum represents the CRNA’s philosophy of balance between our legislated regulatory mandate with compassion and proportionality.
