Fee Structure for 2025-2026

Overview

As a regulatory body, the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) serves the public interest by regulating the registered nursing practice in Alberta. Fees cover the costs of this regulatory process, which includes:

Assessment of applicants to join or renew their status on the register
Implementing accountabilities for the nursing practice through standards and continuing competence
Addressing conduct concerns related to registrants
Performing regulatory functions that align with the CRNA's mandate

All fees below include GST (GST #R106692643).

First-Time Application Fees

One-Time

Account Creation

This is the required fee to create an account with the CRNA. If you already have an account, you do not need to pay again.

Virtul care accounts are exempt from the one-time creation fee.

Permit Fees

The permit fee is only collected once per registrant per practice year. This fee structure is for permits effective between Oct. 1, 2025, and Sept. 30, 2026.

Full Year

Permits that are issued for the full year, which including annual renewals.

Partial Year

Permits that are issued effective May, June, July, August or September will cost a pro-rated fee based on the number of months remaining in the year.

Non-practising Register

For registrants who wish to keep themselves active in our system, but may be on leave.

A permit issued to a registered Canadian nurse who must practice in Alberta short-term for a specific reason.

While some employers may cover the cost of permit fees for employees, it is each applicant or registrant’s responsibility to ensure their initial or renewal application is complete, including payment. Applicants and registrants can download receipts of their transactions with the CRNA when logged in to College Connect, under My Profile.

On a case-by-case basis, registrants may receive a fine for unprofessional conduct or to cover hearing costs. The CRNA publishes fines in the hearing decisions and disciplinary complaint resolution agreements.

Applicants and registrants must register and pay for Professional Liability Protection and Core Services from the Canadian Nurses Protective Society (CNPS).

Applicants may need to pay additional fees payable to other organizations depending on their application pathway and the information they provide. Possible extra costs may include the following:

Registering with the exam provider to write a registration entrance exam or to transfer results.
Completing a credential assessment of post-secondary education.
Completing a competency assessment exam or program.
Taking an English proficiency test.
Applying to and completing a Canadian bridging or nursing refresher program.
Completing any additional education to fill competency gaps (nurse practitioners).
Conducting a criminal record check if you do not currently reside in Canada.
Paying verification fees from another jurisdiction.

These do not apply to every pathway. Breakdowns are available by pathway type for applicants.

The application assessment fee is non-refundable.
Permit fees are non-refundable once a permit is active.

The CRNA does not provide refunds for any fees paid to other organizations. Applicants and registrants must contact organizations directly to inquire about refunds for items such as professional liability protection (PLP), AAN memberships and exam fees.
