Criminal record checks are conducted via our third-party partner, Sterling Backcheck, as part of the application process for all new applicants who are living in Canada, at no extra cost.
The College requires that Canadian residents go through the Sterling Backcheck process first if applicable. If additional records are required, we will notify you directly. The College does not accept vulnerable sector checks in place of criminal record checks.
If you are not yet living in Canada, you must get a criminal record check from your local police station at your own cost and send it to registration@nurses.ab.ca. This criminal record check must be less than 6 months old at the time of receival. We will follow up once received to complete that requirement in your application.
Registered nurses (RN) and nurse practitioners (NP) who are returning to practice do not need to complete a background check.
