Internationally educated nurse (IEN) applicants can start their application at any time, from any device by selecting the pathway that works best for them. Within the College Connect platform, you will be able to confirm which option you have chosen to confirm your competence. If you are unsure of which pathway to choose, you can request a consultation with a registrant navigator.
All pathways require applicants to complete the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) exam.
Different pathways for International Applicants will be determined based on which of the following applies to you:
Have you passed the NCLEX-RN already? You can combine this with any active registration globally to meet the competency requirement. If you meet all the registration requirements, a permit will be issued.
You can request to write the NCLEX-RN if you have current registration in the United States, the Philippines, India, the United Kingdom, Australia, Nigeria, Jamaica, New Zealand or Ireland.
A verification showing active status in good standing (no conditions) in your current jurisdiction must be submitted within the application. Costs include fees paid to the CRNA and costs for the exam, verification and education assessment.
If you provide a verification of equivalent post-secondary education, you can request to write the NCLEX-RN. You do not need to be currently registered. Costs include fees paid to the CRNA and costs for the exam, verification and education assessment.
You can use the Registered Nurses Canadian Competence Assessment Program (formerly known as the Alberta Registered Nurses Assessment Program [(ARNAP]) to meet multiple application requirements including competence and currency of practice. This combined with a verification of equivalent post-secondary education can be used towards a provisional permit and receiving authorization to write the NCLEX-RN. This is ideal for applicants who do not have current registration anywhere. Costs include fees paid to the CRNA and costs for the program, exam, verification and education assessment.
If you are currently registered anywhere globally, that meets currency of practice, you can combine this with an advisory report to meet the competence requirement. The National Nursing Assessment Service (NNAS) report must state 'comparable' or 'somewhat comparable'. This leads to the provisional register until successful completion of the NCLEX-RN.
There are options to meet the requirements. It is recommended you request a consultation with a registrant navigator to find your pathway to a permt.
